Multiplication and Division using an Area Model (array)
When learning multiplication and division we learn to use a variety of startegies and tools and solve a problem. Although we do use algorithms (this is the way that most parents learned), we are use visual models. Research done by Jo Boaler, a leading math education researcher, tells us that when we represent our math visually as well as numerically, students are more likely to remember the concept. Below is a video showing how we can use an area model to solve multiplication.
